The "Main" classification will always be the first classification mentioned on the patent.

In real terms, it's basically the primary aspect of a patent. For example if you were to create a chair with a digital scale on it, the main IPC would most likely be in the furniture category, whereas the IPC to do with the scale would be further down in the list of IPCs.
