Throughout February we've been working on some key updates, improving the search and filtering capabilities, as well as the first major step in our new Topics database. Here's the run down of the top features we've added.
- Improved filtering on search results
- Advanced Search Options
- New Topics database
- Connecting Topics to content
- News results display improvements
- New data sources
Improved filtering on search results
The filters on all data sets have been improved to give you a clearer picture of the results, showing the volume of results under each filter value. We've also added new filtering options to most of the data sets, for example under Patents there are now filters for IPC Codes, Application and Publish year, Assignee Type, Legal Event.
We think these filters provide a more descriptive result set, as well as allowing you to get down to the precise data you want. We'll be adding even more filters in the coming months.
Advanced search options
Many users of Discovery have asked for the ability to construct a more complex search query, including AND, OR, NOT statements. To facilitate this we've added a Search Options icon – it sits next to the Search Boost icon in the search bar.
With the additional options you can construct a basic Boolean query. In the example below I'm looking for results that must contain "electric vehicle", AND should also contain one of "batteries" OR "lithium battery", AND must not contain Tesla.
Note the difference between Keyword and Organizations to indicate the type of search items.
We hope this is a simple way to enable more in-depth queries in Discovery.
New Topics database
The new topics database is built using journal papers. We've extracted over 400,000 technical topics and created a dashboard page for each. You can now follow these more granular level topics to improve the daily/weekly feed email.
We'll be investing more effort into these topics, linking all of our data sets to them, so that ultimately a topic dashboard page is a comprehensive view of what is happening in that area.
The topics system is also helping us to label companies with the appropriate areas of technology that they are working on, to improve the way we find and identify companies.
Take a look at the topics database and try searching for your areas of interest.
Connecting Topics to content
Throughout the next few months you'll start to see our topics system being linked to all other data types. We'll show you the topics that have matched against the content, and you can click directly into the specific topic dashboard.
In this release, for example, you can see the home page feed is now showing you the topics which are linked to each news item in the feed. Click on those topics will take you to their dashboard page.
News results display improvements
A small change to the display of news items in search results. We've listed them in a grid display, providing information about the companies and topics mentioned in the items. You can switch to the previous table view using the toggle on the right.
Also note that by default we will show news items in the past month. You can remove this restriction in the new filters area just above the results list.
New data sources
We've added the following two news sources:
- https://www.fdiforum.net/mag/ (Food & Beverage)
- https://www.aero-mag.com/category/news/ (Manufacturing)
Plus the NASA patent directory for Technology Offerings data:
