Q1: How do I export assignee names of Chinese and Japanese patents in English?
A: Unfortunately, Patsnap's translation feature does not support the translation of assignee names. Therefore, we do not offer translated assignee names when exporting, as we cannot guarantee the accuracy of these translations.
Q2: How do I follow priority applications from 2010-2022 without encountering errors in the data?
A: For reliable data across multiple years, make sure to limit your query by priority date and group by application date. Use criteria such as "By application date > Oldest" to select the representative of the family. If issues persist, a screenshare might help clarify the process better.
Q3: How can I compare the specifications of two applications from the same family?
A: In your results list, you should be able to select the documents you want to compare and use our comparison tool. If you do not see that option, hover over the family member with your mouse or go to the family view to select the documents for comparison.
Q4: I tried to use the comparison tool, but I only see one application in the right-hand column. How do I compare documents if only one document appears?
A: If there's only one document in the list, it has nothing to compare with. Go to the family tab on the left to see the different applications. Switch to the INPADOC Family or Patsnap Family view to see the extended family and compare the documents.
Q5: I switched to the Patsnap family and now see the documents I want to compare. How do I perform a word-for-word comparison?
A: The right side of the screen will show a brief percentage of similarities between the two documents. Use the "Compare Text" switch in the claims or description section for a detailed word-for-word comparison.
Q6: How does Patsnap allocate an assignee region to a patent if no address is given?
A: We determine the country of an assignee based on the address data provided by the patent offices for each patent document. If this is not available for a specific jurisdiction, we may use the same assignee name from another jurisdiction to determine the correct country. In rare cases where we cannot determine the country, it won't be associated with a value for this field.
Q7: What is the limit of Boolean operators?
A: The limit is 1028 for Boolean operators, which is 2^10.
Q8: Why am I not seeing patents in the family in the standard view?
A: To see the patent family table, go into 'Set Field Display,' select the 'Patent Family' field, and then group your results by a family type.
Q9: How can we set file wrapper alerts for WO patents as well as the entire Patent Family?
A: Unfortunately, it is not possible to set file wrapper alerts for WO patents at the moment. You can only set file wrapper alerts for US and EP patents applied for since 2002, and CN patents applied for since 2013. No additional jurisdictions are currently supported.
Q10: I am trying to ungroup the results in my workspace, but it still only shows 18 records (families). How can I see all family members?
A: To see all family members of your current patents in the workspace, go to the 'Data Management' tab, select 'Automatic Update and Expansion,' choose 'Family Application/Expansion,' and select a family type to expand by. After this, the patent family members will be added to your workspace. When you ungroup your results, all the family members should be present.
Q11: How did the Patsnap team manage to obtain information about a patent with undetermined legal status in Kosovo?
A: Kosovo is one of the jurisdictions where the data is unique to us and has come from third-party sources or undergone more rigorous internal value-added processing. You can find a full list of jurisdictions like this in the article: "Patsnap Extended Collection - List of Jurisdictions."
Q12: Do we provide information related to the cost of annuities in various jurisdictions? If so, where can this be found?
A: You can obtain this information through the Portfolio Pruning Report as an "Insights Templates" in our Reports, found under the "Analyze Results" section.
Q13: How is the economic value of a patent calculated?

Q14: How can I edit an existing calculation folder to compare additional folders?

Q15: How do I download the DNA sequences of a patent publication?
A: You can download DNA sequences of a patent publication by going to the patent, selecting 'Sequence Assistant,' then 'Sequence Extraction,' and finally 'Export FASTA.' This will download all of the patent's sequence data as a FASTA file. Alternatively, you can export results as an Excel file by extracting your results into Bio and exporting via the source table.
Q16: What alignment algorithm is used for the 'short' nucleotide sequence search?
A: The alignment algorithm used is Blastn-short.
Q17: When using the bulk search tool, how do I perform a bulk download of each full-text patent PDF in a zip folder?
A: After conducting the bulk search and reaching the results page, click on the "Export" button at the top right. Choose the PDF option under "Export Format," select the desired fields, and click the green "Export" button. You will then be able to download a zip file containing all the patent PDFs along with an Excel file that includes different fields and links to the PDFs.
Q18: How to download the results of all queries in different tabs in an Excel sheet in the case of Expert Search?
A: Hover over your project and select "Export." Then choose "Project Queries" and submit. For exporting patents from the query results, select "Export" in the top right-hand corner of the results page.
Q19: Where do we source our SEP data from?
A: Our SEP (Standard Essential Patent) data includes information declared by seven official websites: ETSI, ITU, IEEE, ISO, ANSI, IEC, and CEN.
Q20: I get an error when trying to use Hiro: "Sorry, your company prohibits Hiro from using the internet for answers." How can I solve this?
A: You can resolve this issue by getting your company admin to go to your admin portal, select 'Security,' and enable internet search.
Q21: I have shared a workspace from one user to another, but I am unable to create a new custom field. How can I do it?
A: For a shared workspace user to create a custom field, they must have administrator privileges. Please ask the owner of the workspace to make you an administrator. They can do this by going to the workspace, selecting 'Manage Sharing,' finding your email, selecting 'Edit Sharing Permissions,' and changing your permission to administrator.
Q22: How can I receive email alerts for new family members or legal status changes in patent families?
A: To automatically add new family members to a Workspace and receive monthly email alerts, go to the 'Automatic update & expansion' menu und the 'Update and alert' tab found in your workspace folder. There, you can initially expand the family with the "Family/Application expansion" switch. Then, set up an email alert for the folder (found in the same tab under "Email Alert", selecting either the 'New Patent Publications' alert or one of the family alerts along with the 'Legal Status' alert.
Q23: Is there a way to view the search history of another account in my firm?
A: Unfortunately, it is not possible to view the search history of other users in the company, even with admin access, due to security reasons. The admin can only turn on or off the history of the company.
Q24: How can I download a batch of references as PDFs?
A: To bulk download PDFs, go to the 'Export' option on the search results page. Once you reach the Export menu, select 'PDF' as the Export Format.
Q25: What is a GBC Code?
A: GBC is a Chinese classification code present only on Chinese applications. It stands for 'Industrial Classification for National Economic Activities.' We have shortened it to 'GBC' because the classifications usually start with 'gb,' for example, GB/T4754.
Q26: Can Patsnap search for and extract 5’UTR and 3’UTR sequences from patents or other associated literature?
A: Currently, we do not have a tag for 5’UTR and 3’UTR sequences, but the sequences are available in the Bio database. Users can retrieve these UTR sequences through a sequence search.
Q27: Is there a specific configuration that only shows the patent specifically related to the number searched for?
A: When entering a patent number like WO2007127317, many results appear because it is treated as a keyword. To retrieve only the patent number, enter the full number with the kind code in the "Publication Number" field, for example, PN: WO2007127317A2.
Q28: Can we save the search parameters of a Bio search?
A: It is not currently possible to save search parameters in Bio. However, the same parameters will remain even after closing Bio until you click the "Restore Your Setting" button.
Q29: How does your valuation use real-world sales and licenses to inform the data? Are actual sales and licenses used at all?
A: We use actual transaction data of patents for training and validation of the patent value evaluation model, then use the model to evaluate the patent value. The patent value evaluation index does not include information about the transaction or license amount of the patent because this data is difficult to obtain due to low coverage and usually not being public.
Q30: Do we have a way of being alerted when a new family member is added?
A: After searching for your query and being on the results page, click the "Set Email Alerts" button near the top right. You will find an option to select a family alert (Simple, Patsnap, or INPADOC family) that will notify you if a new member is added to the patent family.
Q31: Why is a specific patent not appearing in my search results, even though I expect it to?
A: This may be due to the way patents are grouped by family representatives in your search results. If the expected patent is not the family representative, it might be hidden in grouped results. Try ungrouping the results to view individual publications. This often resolves the issue and displays the missing patent.
Q32: What Happens When I Exclude a Country (e.g., China) in Patsnap Analytics?
A: When you exclude a country such as China (CN) using the country filter in Analytics, it removes all patent records with a CN publication number from your results. This means:

Q38: I'm getting the error "The maximum number of project creations has been reached!" on Eureka. Is there a project limit for the free version?

Q39: Can I generate a consolidated report for all patents under a specific assignee instead of downloading separate PDFs?
A: At the moment, the system downloads each patent PDF individually. These are saved together in a folder when you extract the ZIP file. Alongside this, an Excel file is also provided that includes key data points and links to each PDF. A fully consolidated report combining all PDFs into one document is not currently available.
Q40: Why is a US patent showing as the family representative in my workspace when I’ve set the representative order as EP > WO > US, and there is an EP document in the family?
A: The representative patent is selected from only those patents saved in your workspace. If the EP patent isn’t saved, the system will move to the next available option based on your selected priority (WO or US). Please check if the EP patent is saved to your workspace — once added, it should reflect correctly based on your criteria.
Q41: In the Competitive Key Report's Application Trend chart, do the numbers reflect 1 application per patent family or individual applications (ungrouped)?
A: The Application Trend chart follows the grouping settings you've selected for the report. If your report is grouped by patent family, the chart will count 1 application per family. If ungrouped, it will count individual applications.
Q42: Why are the Authorities and Patent Type fields grayed out in PatSnap search?
A: The fields are grayed out because you are currently in Family Mode search. In this mode, you cannot limit the databases as it would prevent returning all family members. To use these fields, switch to Publication Mode search, where you can apply specific database limits.
Q43: Can I sort by legal status in PatSnap Workspace?
A: Currently, sorting by legal status is not supported in Workspace. However, you can filter results by legal status using the “Refine” button. Sorting options are limited to those available under the “Advanced Sort” menu.
Q44: How can I select all records in a patent list instead of one page at a time?
A: When exporting or saving to a workspace in PatSnap, you don't need to manually select each page. Simply click the “Export” or “Save to Workspace” button directly—this will automatically include all the top records in the list (up to 500,000 records while using 'Save to Workspace', or up to 100,00 records from the Export screen).
Q45: How can I now share PatSnap links with people who don’t have an account?
A: Use the “Copy Link” option from the three-dot menu on the patent view page. This generates a secure link that non-users can access.
Q46: Why are my coworkers unable to open PatSnap patent links anymore?
A: As of August 2024, PatSnap changed how links can be shared to prevent unauthorized data crawling. Directly copying the URL from the browser no longer provides public access.
Q47: What if I want to share a link to a specific section (like Claims or Legal Info), not just the Abstract?
A: Currently, the “Copy Link” button always points to the Abstract page, even if you’re viewing another tab. A workaround is to manually replace “abst?” in the link with “clms?” (for Claims), etc., though this is not officially supported.
Q48: We’ve used many old links in documentation—what can we do now?
A: Unfortunately, any old links that were copied from the browser may no longer work. You’ll need to regenerate them using the official “Copy Link” function for continued external access.
Q49: How do I generate citations for a list of patents I’ve imported?
A: To generate citations from an imported list:
While in workspaces, select the records you'd like to search citations on.
From the lower left of the workspaces screen, choose 'Selected Records', then "Select all".A menu will appear—select “Search citations”.

“Cites” for backwards citations (documents your patents cite), or
“Cited By” for forward citations (documents that cite your patents).

Q52: Can I sort and navigate my workspaces by name, type, or updated time?
A: Yes, within each Workspace type (e.g., Personal, Team, Shared), you can sort your workspaces by name, type, or updated time using the sort options at the top right of the workspace list.
Q53: Can I simultaneously save or export multiple family members from the family page of a patent?
A: Currently, you can only export or save one family member at a time. To export multiple family members, select each member individually and add them to a workspace. Once in the workspace, ensure the results are set to "Ungrouped" for better management and export.
Q54: Is it possible to generate both the issue and application trend on the same graph using custom analysis?

Q55: Why am I seeing fewer patents in the insights when I try to generate a graph?
A: The system may show only one member per family. To view all patents, go to "Analysis Preferences" and select "Ungrouped".
Q56: What is the difference between the Semantic search and 'Similar Patents' features?
A: Semantic search uses AI to find relevance based on full content; Similar Patents filters out family duplicates to show only external but similar patents.
Q57: Does AI tagging automatically tag new patents added to the workspace if the client has premium?
A: No, AI tagging doesn’t automatically apply unless you add patents using “tagging across family”.
Q58: Can PatSnap help me find patents from a company with multiple entities acting as patent assignees, even if I don’t know all the entity names?
A: Yes, use PatSnap’s corporate tree tool. Add “Assignee” field in search, then click the "Corporate tree" button to explore related entities.

A: This error occurs when you select both a parent and its child node in the modification search. The system automatically includes the child node when the parent node is selected, which causes a conflict. To fix this, simply deselect the parent node (e.g., non-natural amino acids) and then add the desired child modification (e.g., Cha). This should resolve the error.
Q62: How can I search to see which countries a company has patents in?
A: Search by company using the ANCS field. Then use the Authority filter on the left to see countries. Make sure to ungroup results.
Q63: Is there a way to add all family members to my Workspace automatically?
A: Yes! Go to Workspace > Automatic Update & Expansion > enable Family/Application Expansion.

A: "Application Domains: Yes – they are based on CPC codes and patent descriptions.

Q69: Can I export patents from all subfolders within a Main Folder in Workspace?
A: "Currently, it’s not possible to export directly from multiple subfolders at once. However, there’s a workaround:
Create a Union Folder by clicking “New Folder” → “Union.” Select the subfolders you want to combine. Export the combined patents from the new Union Folder."
Q70: Can AI Tagging be trained on patents from one workspace and applied to another workspace?
A: Currently, AI Tagging can only be trained within a workspace. If Workspace 1 has manual tags but no overlap with patents in Workspace 2, AI cannot be trained on the tags in Workspace 1 and applied to Workspace 2.
For AI Tagging to work across workspaces, there must be patent overlap between them. In that case, AI will use the tags in the second workspace as training data.
Q71: Why does the "You have exceeded the maximum number of created reports" message appear?
A: This message appears when you've hit the limit for the number of reports you can create. To create new reports, you'll need to delete some of the old ones.
Q72: Why aren't my comments visible across different workspaces, and how can I make them visible in all workspaces?
A: Comments will only appear across workspaces if they are set to "Company" visibility. If they are marked as "Workspace" visibility, they will stay within the current workspace. To make comments visible across all workspaces, change their visibility to "Company," either individually or in bulk via the comment management area.
Q73: How are the priority dates and expiry dates of the granted patents determined?
A: The priority date is typically the application date. The expiry date is generally 20 years from the priority date, but it can vary. For utility models, the expiry date may be 10 years after the priority date. You can refer to the article "What Is A Utility Model?" for more details.
Q74: Does Patsnap have record of licensing history?
A: Patsnap tracks publicly announced licensing data, available in the "Legal > Licensing" tab.
Q75: How do I delete selected applications from my search result list?
A: There is currently no delete option directly in the search results. You can use the "NOT" operator in the "Refine keywords" bar to exclude applications. Alternatively, you can save your results to a Workspace and delete them from there.
Q76: How do I export highlighted keywords from my search results?
A: You can export highlighted keywords by selecting the "Include custom highlight keyword(s)" option during export.
Q77: Why can't I export query highlights along with custom ones?
A: Currently, only custom highlights can be exported.
Q78: Can I recover my deleted search history?
A: Unfortunately, once the search history is deleted, we do not store it for privacy reasons and cannot recover it.
Q79: Can I update the data fields shown in the patent alert emails?
A: While you can customize the alert settings to display certain fields (like abstracts, translations, and custom fields), the default fields such as application number, priority date, and assignee cannot be modified.
Q80: How can I set up an alert for literature/papers in Eureka
A: Currently, alerts in Eureka can only be set up for patents. Literature (papers) alerts are not yet supported, but this feature may be available later.
Q81: As an Admin, can I view login, Analytics, or Workspace history for other users in my organization?
A: No, due to security and privacy reasons, Admins can't view detailed activity history such as logins or Workspace usage for other users. Admins can only enable or disable the company-wide history feature in the Admin Settings.
Q82: Does Patsnap rank patents found in semantic search relative to the input prompt?
A: Yes, Patsnap’s semantic search uses NLP and machine learning to analyze your query and rank the most relevant patents at the top of the results list.
Q83: Does Patsnap use a cosine function for ranking in semantic search? If not, how are results ranked?
A: While the specific algorithm details are proprietary, the ranking is based on machine learning models trained to mimic how patent examiners retrieve relevant documents. It goes beyond simple cosine similarity by incorporating domain knowledge and advanced linguistic modeling.

Q88: Do we have the ability to OCR PDF Docs that are downloaded from Patsnap?
A: Most of our sources, including official sources, don't provide patent PDFs with OCR. Therefore, OCR is not supported when downloading PDFs from Patsnap.
Q89: How can I share the dashboard with other users in the company?
A: It's not currently possible to share dashboards with others, unfortunately. However, other clients have also asked about this feature and we have made the product team aware of this feedback. It is estimated that this function/feature will be released in the near future.
Q90: Is there a way to turn off the auto highlighting of chemicals?
A: Yes, the chemical highlighting in patent view can be turned off by clicking on "Structure Assistant" and then turning the highlighter toggle off.
Q91: Is there a way to export the unique patent records from a bulk match search without them being aggregated into simple family records?
A: Yes. On the results page, click on the number of results and select "Ungrouped" as the grouping option. Then when you click the export button, you’ll be able to export the unique patents.
Q93: Can we search patents based on opt-out status for EP (European Patents), and how reliable is it for FTO (Freedom to Operate) analysis?
A: Yes, Patsnap allows you to search and filter EP patents based on their Unified Patent Court (UPC) opt-out status using the "UPC Status" filter. This data is sourced from official EPO records and is updated regularly, so it's considered reliable. However, for high-stakes FTO analysis, it’s still recommended to consult a legal expert for final validation.
Q94: What is the Market Value (Score) in Patsnap?
A: The Market Value (Score) is a metric from 0 to 100 that estimates the commercial potential of a patent. It takes into account factors like citations, legal status, patent family size, market coverage, and technology relevance. This score helps users compare the relative value of patents in terms of their market potential.

Q97: How can I share a search result with colleagues, especially those who don’t have a Patsnap account?
A: To share a search result with both Patsnap users and non-users, first save the results to a Workspace. Once saved, open the Workspace folder and click on the "Share" button. Go to the "Public" tab, turn the link generation toggle on and then click "Copy link." You can now send the Workspace link to your colleagues, whether they have a Patsnap account or not.
Q98: Can you provide details about the Discovery tab linked to the assignee name in Patsnap?
A: The Discovery tab, visible when you hover over an assignee's name, provides access to more detailed information about the assignee, whether a person or company. When the assignee is linked to a company, clicking the Discovery tab will lead you to the corresponding company profile in Patsnap Discovery. This profile includes various company insights. Q99: If I switch my colleague from an Analytics to a Workspace Reader license, will they still be able to see the Workspaces they created under the Analytics account?
A: Yes, your colleague will still be able to see the Workspaces she created under the Analytics account, even after switching to Reader access. However, they will no longer be able to create new Workspaces with Reader access.
Q100: What does No Agency mean?
A: "No agency" means that no law firm is associated with the filing for the data available for a patent, but doesn't necessarily mean the assignee filed the application themselves.
Q101: I put a patent in a Workspace earlier this week, but now it's gone. Where did it go?
A: The patent might be grouped with other patents in its family. If you prefer each patent to appear on a separate line, you can change the grouping settings to "Ungrouped".
Q102: How can I find the query that led to the hits in my Workspace if I don't have automatic updates turned on?
A: Unfortunately, there is no way to view the search query that was used to create the Workspace folder without turning on automatic update during its creation. As a workaround, you can copy the query into the folder's "Description" field for easy reference later. To do this, click on the "View query" text when saving patents to a Workspace and then edit the folder description.
As a last resort, you can also check your Search History to see which queries you used at the time you created the Workspace folder.
Q103: Why do the field displays not mirror when sharing a Workspace, even after selecting the checkbox to 'synchronize field display'?
A: When sharing a Workspace with a non-subscriber, the results will default to being sorted by 'Date Added,' as advanced sorting options are exclusive to subscribers. This can cause the field displays to differ. The 'Synchronize field display' option only applies when sharing with another Patsnap user.
Q104: How can I print the family chart for a patent?
