AI Mode
AI Mode in Analytics helps you move from manual patent searching and analysis to a conversational workflow. Instead of building complex searches, choosing workflows, and stitching together results manually, you can ask Hiro questions in natural language and receive structured outputs based on Analytics tools and PatSnap innovation data.
Use AI Mode when you want to explore patent questions, compare portfolios, identify competitors, investigate technology spaces, or generate analysis that can be reviewed and shared with your team.
AI-generated outputs should be reviewed against the underlying source data before you use them for decision-making. AI Mode can support IP, R&D, and competitive intelligence workflows, but its outputs should not be treated as legal, technical, financial, or professional advice.
What is AI Mode?
AI Mode is an AI-powered experience in Analytics that lets you ask questions using natural language. Hiro interprets your question, identifies the relevant Analytics tools and workflows, and returns structured insights based on available innovation data.
AI Mode is designed to help reduce the manual steps often required for patent searching, filtering, comparison, and reporting. It can help you move from a broad question to a more focused analysis without needing to manually configure every step of the workflow.
When to use AI Mode
- Ask patent, portfolio, or technology questions in natural language.
- Explore a company, competitor, technology area, or patent set.
- Generate structured summaries, comparisons, or recommendations.
- Investigate white space opportunities, potential risks, or emerging trends.
- Move from an initial question to follow-up analysis without restarting your workflow.
Example questions you can ask
- Use AI Mode to compare patent portfolios, identify differences between organizations, or understand where competitors are active. For example, you might ask: How does our portfolio compare to Company X? or Who are the emerging competitors in this technology area?
- Use AI Mode to explore a technology area and understand key players, filing trends, technology clusters, or whitespace opportunities. For example, you might ask: Are there white space opportunities in solid-state battery technology?
- Use AI Mode to help investigate patent relevance, risk signals, or relationships between a new filing and an existing portfolio. For example, you might ask: Which patents in this portfolio may be most relevant to this new filing?
- Use AI Mode to request structured outputs such as summaries, comparisons, landscapes, and draft reports. The output can help you review the analysis more quickly and decide what to investigate next.
How AI Mode works
- Start by typing a question into AI Mode. You do not need to begin with a Boolean string, classification code, or predefined workflow. Ask the question in the same way you would ask a colleague.
- Hiro interprets your intent and determines which Analytics workflows, tools, and data sources are relevant to the question. This helps reduce the need to manually decide which workflow to use or which steps to run first.
- AI Mode combines purpose-built IP and R&D skills, AI reasoning, and PatSnap innovation data to generate an answer. This helps the response stay focused on patent, R&D, portfolio, and competitive intelligence use cases.
- Review the answer, supporting details, and any generated output. You can use the response to guide further research, ask follow-up questions, or prepare analysis for review with your team.
Using AI Mode in Analytics
- Open Analytics.
- Go to AI Mode.
- Enter your question in the chat interface.
- Review the response from Hiro.
- Ask follow-up questions to refine the analysis, compare additional entities, or request a different output format.
- Validate the output against the source data before using it in reports, recommendations, or decision-making workflows.
Best practices
- Explain what you want to understand, compare, or generate. A focused question usually produces a more useful answer than a very broad prompt.
- Add important details such as company names, technology areas, jurisdictions, date ranges, portfolio scope, or the type of output you need.
- Continue the conversation to narrow the analysis, compare another company, explain a trend, or request a more detailed breakdown.
- Review the underlying source data, search logic, and cited results where available. This is especially important for risk, novelty, freedom-to-operate, legal status, or investment-related questions.
Example workflow: Compare your portfolio with a competitor
- Open AI Mode in Analytics.
- Ask a question such as: How does our portfolio compare to Company X in solid-state battery technology?
- Review the structured comparison, including any trends, strengths, gaps, or suggested follow-up areas.
- Ask a follow-up question, such as: Which technology areas show the biggest difference between the two portfolios?
- Review the underlying data before sharing the output or using it to support a business decision.
Limitations and review guidance
- AI Mode can help accelerate analysis, but it does not replace expert review.
- Outputs may need refinement if the question is broad, ambiguous, or missing key context.
- Patent, legal, ownership, and competitive intelligence outputs should be checked against source records before use.
- Availability may depend on your Analytics access, package, permissions, or rollout status.
Key takeaways
- AI Mode lets you ask Analytics questions in natural language.
- Hiro helps identify relevant tools, workflows, and data based on your question.
- You can use AI Mode for portfolio analysis, competitor research, technology landscapes, patent relevance checks, and structured reporting.
- Use follow-up questions to refine the analysis and request more specific outputs.
- Always validate AI-generated outputs against the source data before using them for important decisions.
