Custom Analysis

Custom Analysis is a powerful visualization and reporting tool within PatSnap Analytics that helps users transform large patent result sets into clear, actionable insights. Rather than manually reviewing hundreds or thousands of patent records, users can create customized charts and reports by selecting relevant patent dimensions, metrics, and data fields to analyze trends, portfolio distributions, competitive landscapes, and other key intelligence. The tool offers flexible customization through Data, Display, Style, and Templates tabs, allowing users to tailor visualizations and save reusable chart configurations. Users can further enhance their analysis by adding titles, descriptions, and AI-generated insights using HIRO, then save, share, or export their work for presentations and reporting. Overall, Custom Analysis streamlines the process of turning complex patent data into meaningful visual stories that are easier to understand, communicate, and act upon.

  • Custom Analysis turns large patent result sets into clear charts and reports.

It helps you move from raw search results to insights that are easier to understand and share.

Instead of scrolling through hundreds or thousands of records, you can communicate findings visually.
  • There are two main ways to launch Custom Analysis:

From search results: after running a search, click Custom Analysis at the top of the results page.

From Workspace: go to your workspace, open the Analysis tab, and launch Custom Analysis from there.

If you start from Workspace, you can also choose which folder to include in the analysis.
  • The interface is designed to be intuitive and flexible.

You will see four main tabs on the left side:

    Data

    Display

    Style

    Templates

Before building the chart, check the Settings tab if you need to control how the data is grouped.
  • In the Data tab, you can select from a long list of available fields.

    These fields may include:

    Standard patent fields

    Custom fields

Dimensions are the data points you want to plot and analyze.

You can add multiple dimensions to create more detailed visualizations and compare relationships across data points.

    Example:

    Dimension 1: Standardized current assignees

    Dimension 2: Simple legal status

This can help show how portfolios are distributed across categories like active, pending, expired, or other.
  • After selecting your fields, click Analyze to generate the visualization automatically.

Use the three-line menu beside each dimension to:

    Open customized sorting

    Include or exclude specific entities

You can also add analytical metrics for deeper insight, such as:

    Patent count

    Inventor count

    Citation count

You can even create custom metrics by combining fields and calculations.
  • Use the Display tab to control how the chart appears.

    Here you can choose:

    The chart type

    Axis titles

    Whether to show a legend

    Whether to show chart data

    Etc

You can also sort the displayed data.

Example: reorder organizations so a specific assignee appears first.
  • In the Style tab, you can change the look and feel of the chart.

    Options include:

    Colors

    Fonts

    Etc

This is useful for matching company branding or reporting standards.
  • The Templates tab helps you get started faster.

You can choose from prebuilt templates for common chart types.

You can also save your own templates for future use.

Saved templates appear under My Templates.

This is helpful when you want to reuse the same chart structure later.
  • Once your chart is ready, add:

    A clear title

    A chart description

If you need help writing the summary or description, use HIRO on the side of the page.

You can ask HIRO to analyze the visual and generate insights/key takeaways.
  • When the visualization is complete, you can:

Save it as a new chart

    Generate a shareable link

Export it for reports or presentations

These options make it easy to revisit and share your insights with others.
  • Custom Analysis is a flexible tool in PatSnap Analytics.

It helps transform patent data into meaningful visualizations tailored to your workflow.

The main value is making patent insights easier to understand, present, and act on.
