Use KWIC in Quick View to Review Query Matches

KWIC, or Keywords in Context, is a Quick View tab in PatSnap Analytics that helps you understand why a patent record appears in your search results. It shows query matches as short sentence-based snippets across key patent fields, so you can review relevance without opening and reading the full record first.

Use KWIC when you are reviewing large, broad, or ambiguous result sets and need to quickly confirm whether a record is relevant to your search intent.

What KWIC shows

KWIC displays matching content from the search fields used in your query. For example, if your query searches TAC fields, KWIC shows matching snippets from the relevant supported text fields.

  • KWIC can show matches from the abstract, claims, description, technical problem, technical solution, and technical benefit fields. Where available, it can also include translated content for supported fields.
  • KWIC displays up to 5 sentence-based snippets per field. This helps you review the surrounding context of each match instead of only seeing isolated highlighted terms.
  • When translated fields are included in the search, KWIC prioritizes matches from the original text. If fewer than 5 original text snippets are found, KWIC can show translation snippets instead.

How to use KWIC in Quick View

  1. Run a patent search in PatSnap Analytics.
  2. Open a result in Quick View.
  3. Select the KWIC tab.
  4. Review the snippets shown for each available field.
  5. Use the snippets to decide whether the record is relevant before opening the full patent document.

When to use KWIC

  • Use KWIC to see where your query terms appear in the record. This is useful when a result seems unexpected or when you need to confirm whether a match is meaningful.
  • KWIC reduces the need to manually open and scan full patent documents during early screening. You can review snippets first, then focus on the records that appear most relevant.
  • Some records may match your query terms but not your intended concept. KWIC helps you identify these false positives by showing the sentence context around the match.

Current limitations

KWIC is available in Analytics Quick View only. It is not currently available in Workspaces.

  • KWIC highlighting may not fully reflect advanced query syntax. For example, if a query uses proximity logic, highlighted terms may appear even when the terms do not appear together in the exact relationship defined by the query.
  • KWIC shows up to 5 sentence-based snippets per field. If more matches exist in a field, only a limited set of snippets is displayed in Quick View.
