Templates (Drafting)

Templates define the structure and drafting requirements used when creating documents in Eureka by Patsnap. A Template can determine which sections are included, how the document is organized, and the instructions used to generate individual sections.

Templates can be used with supported drafting tasks such as Invention Disclosure, Patent Application, and Office Action Response.

Before using a Template, review its document structure and drafting requirements to make sure it matches your current task, target patent office, output language, and intended deliverable.

To find the Templates section, open any drafting agent in Eureka by Patsnap. In the left-side navigation, locate the Drafting section and select Templates.

Find Templates

You can access Templates when configuring a new drafting task. On the New Task page, select Template to open the Template selector.

The New Task page also lets you confirm the Agent, Project, output language, and other task settings before starting.

Browse and Use Templates

  • Use the Template selector to browse the available Templates. You can search for a Template, sort by Recently Updated, and use the available task and region filters.

    Available task filters can include:

    • Invention Disclosure
    • Patent Application
    • Office Action Response

    Region filters can include:

    • USPTO
    • EPO
    • PCT
    • CNIPA
    • JPO
    • KIPO
  • Preview a Template before selecting it to review its chapter structure, document structure, drafting fields, and drafting requirements.

Confirm that the Template is appropriate for the task you are completing, the target patent office, your output language, and the document you intend to create.

Create a Template

Select Create Template when you want to create a Template for your own drafting requirements.

During creation, choose a Creation Method and complete the available Template information, including Template Name, Region, Technology Area, Template Type, Description, and Visibility.

  • You can create a Template using one of the available creation methods:

    • Import from Word: Start from an existing Word document.
    • Copy Template: Use an existing Template as your starting point and modify it for your requirements.
    • Blank Template: Build a new Template from the beginning.
    • Generate from Reference Patents: Use reference patent materials to generate a Template.

Choose the method that provides the closest starting point for the structure and drafting requirements you need.

  • Use Copy Template when an existing Template already has a structure close to what you need.

After copying the Template, review and edit its settings, document structure, AI Instructions, Dynamic Fields, and other available drafting requirements before saving it.

  • Select Generate from Reference Patents when you want the system to use reference materials to generate a Template.

Configure the available generation settings, including:

    • Reference Sources
    • Granularity
    • Reference Patents
    • Reference Documents

When your reference materials and settings are ready, select Generate Template.

Review a Generated Template

  • When generating a Template from reference patents, the system extracts structure and drafting style from the reference materials and uses their detected language when generating Template instructions.

Review the generated chapter structure, instruction content, and instruction language before editing and saving the Template.

Do not assume that generated instruction language will match the current interface language. For example, if you use an English reference patent while working in a Chinese interface, review the generated instructions against the reference materials and your team's requirements.

  • Confirm that Region matches the patent office or jurisdiction for which the Template is intended.

Region and interface language are separate settings.

New Templates on the Japanese site default to JPO. If the Template is intended for another patent office, change the Region during creation.

Edit and Manage Templates

Open a Template's action menu to access the management options available to you.

  • Depending on the Template and your permissions, available actions can include:
    • Preview: Review the Template before using or changing it.
    • Edit: Update an editable Template's settings, structure, or drafting requirements.
    • Duplicate: Create a separate copy that you can modify.
    • Share: Share the template to other users - adjust the permission level accordingly.
    • Delete: Remove a Template where your permissions allow it.
    • Star Icon: Favorite your templates which will get saved into the Favorites tab.

Best Practices

  • Test a newly created or modified Template in a sample task before using it more broadly.

Review the generated document to confirm that the chapter structure, drafting requirements, instructions, language, and Region behave as expected.

Avoid adding overlapping or conflicting requirements, as these can make the intended drafting behavior unclear.

Key Takeaways

  • Templates define the structure and drafting requirements used to generate documents in supported drafting workflows.
  • Search, filter, and preview Templates before use to confirm they match your task, Region, output language, and intended deliverable.
  • Create Templates by importing from Word, copying an existing Template, starting from a blank Template, or generating one from reference patents.
  • Review and test custom or generated Templates before wider use, especially their structure, instructions, instruction language, and Region.
