Rule-Based Tagging

Learn how to streamline your patent analysis workflow with Patsnap's Rule-Based Tagging feature. Instead of manually assigning tags to individual records, you can create intelligent rules that automatically classify patents based on criteria of interest. Whether you're managing ongoing patent reviews or recurring classification tasks, rule-based tagging helps you save time, reduce manual effort, and focus on higher-value analysis instead of repetitive data management.

  • Rule-based tagging builds on custom fields in Patsnap Analytics.

Instead of manually tagging records one by one, you create rules that automatically assign tags.

The main benefit is saving time and reducing manual effort.
  • From your workspace, make sure you already have a custom field created.

Open rule-based tagging in either of these ways:

Go to Tagging at the top of the screen and select Rule-based tagging

Open the Custom fields dropdown and choose Rule-based tagging

This takes you to the setup screen where you can define tagging rules.
  • On the left side, you will see the available custom field nodes.

On the right side, you will see dropdowns under Add fields.

These dropdowns let you build the condition that determines how records should be tagged.

    The logic is essentially:

If a record matches the rule, then apply the tag
  • Choose the node you want to configure.

Build a rule using the available dropdowns.

    Example shown in the video:

Within the claims section if the term "pedicle" appears then tag the record as red

You can keep rules simple or make them more complex depending on your needs.

You can repeat the same process for other nodes as needed.
  • Before running the tagging process, review the tagging effect setting at the bottom.

This controls how tagging is applied, such as: tagging only untagged patents with new values, tagging all patents with new values, etc

Make sure the setting matches how you want existing records handled.
  • Once your rule and tagging effect are set, click Start tagging.

    Patsnap will:

    Scan the workspace folder list

    Evaluate the rules you created

    Automatically apply the matching tags

This removes the need to manually tag records one at a time.
  • After tagging finishes, return to the custom field view.

You should see tags added automatically to records that matched your rule.

In the example, multiple tags were populated based on the rule that was created.
  • Rule-based tagging extends the value of custom fields by automating classification.

It is especially helpful when you need to apply the same tagging logic repeatedly.

The result is a faster, more consistent workflow with far less manual effort.
